Last week Canada the World was shocked to see the latest tweet from Lisa LaFlamme who for 35 years served as a faithful part of the CTV News team. People opened their homes to her, and Bell Media, the parent company of CTV cashed in on the advertising dollars that brands spent with Bell Media.

Over her illustrious career, Lisa covered some of the biggest stories – everything from elections, and wars to natural disasters. That all came to halt when she was suddenly let go from Bell Media despite being a ratings giant for the company. In her tweet, she shared, “I was blindsided and am still shocked and saddened by Bell Media’s decision,” LaFlamme said, adding that she had been asked to keep her firing confidential for weeks.
“At 58, I still thought I’d have a lot more time to tell more of the stories that impact our daily lives,” she told followers. “While it is crushing to be leaving CTV National News in a manner that is not my choice, please know reporting to you has truly been the greatest honor of my life and I thank you for always being there.”
In a statement Monday, CTV said it had made a “business decision” to pursue a “different direction” for the chief news anchor role, citing “changing viewer habits.” The network announced the same day that national affairs correspondent Omar Sachedina, 39, would step into the role.
A week later people are still discussing and debating the situation and unfair treatment that Lisa received. So this begs the question, will brands show their support for Lisa (and its treatment of her) by halting advertising with Bell Media?
