Colleen MooreheadRecently the AMA Toronto held an event as part of its Legendary Leadership series and invited Colleen Moorehead, Chief Client Officer at Osler to sit down for a one on one conversation with John Clinton, Former Head of Edelman Canada. Colleen has had a successful career with senior roles at Merrill Lynch and CIBC; she is also the Co-Founder and President of E*TRADE Canada.

Here are some of the notes from the conversation with John and Colleen:

What is personal success to you?

  • I like to live in balance
  • I have to feel success in what I’m doing having a great team, they feel like we are achieving
  • I have to have a multi-faceted life – I have charity work, invest in companies do it all

How do you tackle work, life, balance?

  • I just get it done!

What has been the biggest blunder of your career?

  • I had a client who was 60% of our company’s revenue
    • in a meeting he harassed an employee, she ended up in the hospital
    • I approached the individual, who asked – “Are you here to resign the business?”
      • I said “No, I’d have to let go of 40 people”
    • This had haunted me for years later

What keeps you up at night?

  • My kids
  • Kids that hurts the most. When I look forward, I wonder how our children will have a life of abundance that we had

Is there a difference between male and female leaders?

  • There is no difference, it styles
  • I don’t think I’ve ever said “wow that’s a grew leader bc It a guy”
  • Great leaders can build teams, can put people first
  • The execution can be different
  • Great leadership is so rate

What is the hardest change in leadership is going from management to general management (sales, finance, other departments)?

  • 50% fail
  • You are no longer an expert, it is not cultivating them. How do you motivate then, watch over them but not stand on their back
  • Going from being a manager to leader, looking at the business operations
  • Getting there, being human
  • Not being afraid to fail
  • Being transparent
  • It is people skills
