The findings of the two year investigation by the Privacy Commissioner into Tim Hortons mobile app has come back and it does not look good for the Canadian QSR brand. A number of complaints were reported between 2019-2020 alleging the app was violating user privacy, and saying app was out of compliance with Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
“Tim Hortons clearly crossed the line by amassing a huge amount of highly sensitive information about its customers,” Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien said in a statement that underscored harms that can result from “poorly designed technologies.”
Based on the report which was conducted by federal and provincial authorities also, it found that Tim Hortons app lack proper privacy management. The privacy authorities recommended that Tim Hortons delete any remaining location data and maintain a privacy program to checks its app and ensure users are clearly informed about data collection.
