Lisa LaflammeAlthough she is no longer with Bell Media, Lisa LaFlamme continues to be the best storyteller of the month.  On August 15th, Lisa broke the news that she was fired from Bell Media which was a complete shock with many both inside and outside of the organization.  This is also shocking when you look at what she brought to the organization with her quality and style of journalism.

Why was Lisa LaFlamme fired from Bell Media?

Without a clear reason why Lisa was let go, people naturally filled in their own narrative, many suggesting ageism, sexism, and many conversations about a negative work environment within the CTV newsroom.

Bell announced an internal investigation is taking place but the damage to their reputation was already done.  Consumers have become increasingly vocal over the last few years, cancel culture continues to rise and people want to consume brands they trust and think are fair.  We have heard that some brands will be looking to adjust their advertising spending due to the treatment Lisa LaFlame.

Every story needs a villain or fall guy

Late Friday, Bell Media announced that Michael Melling, Vice President of News for Bell Media will be taking a leave of absence from the organization.  A move that is as old as time, he was the person who fired Lisa and instantly became the face of the scandal.  Bell Media wanted to move forward and put this situation in the rearview.  Mirko Bibic, President and CEO of Bell Media provided an update on the situation via his LinkedIn account which was met with more questions than answers from commenters.

Should Lisa LaFlamme return to CTV if she is offered?

One possible ending to this story is that Bell Media reaches out to LaFlamme and offers her job back, with an increase in pay and responsibilities. Does that makes sense? It certainly puts her in an extremely powerful position to negotiate at terms that she wants versus be dictated to by the network. Why if Lisa adds a clause that guaranteed she works till say 74, she would instantly make Canadian journalism history and change the media landscape forever and return to something she is clearly very passionate about doing.
