To celebrate International Women's Day and Women's History Month, Profectio and PR In Canada are taking a moment to learn from some of the women across Canada that are leading the way for more change. Women who have made a difference in their organizations, continue to have a positive impact on those around them while creating additional opportunities for women to excel today, and tomorrow.
As part of our series, we talk with Michelle Menard, VP Media Director at True Media Canada.
Today is IWD, what does it mean to you?
Michelle - A day like any other, but with some reflection on gender evolution including shifts within the workplace and celebrating peers.
What are you most excited about when it comes to women in the workplace?
Michelle - The continued increase of women in leadership roles and female entrepreneurs. Continued opportunity to transform what a leader looks like and the qualities they posses/focus on. With this comes changes in workplace culture, organizational structure and business prioritization. Change within the workplace that reflects the change we are seeing outside the workplace.
What are you disappointed about when it comes to women in the workplace?
Michelle - Very generalized but there is still a lack of adaptation of expectations within the work place that align with, or reflect the gender role shifts we are seeing today. Changes that will allow a better work life balance and customization for those women who are mothers and leaders are required. I look at countries like the US and I am still baffled by the lack of support for new mothers including the limited maternity leave support they get.
What are 3 things women in the marcom (marketing, communications) industry need to do more?
Michelle -
- Less feeling of guilt for prioritization of work/life balance
- Lean in to and create a better support system with peers
- Acknowledge and overcome imposter syndrome (I can’t speak for all women, but this is prevalent in those that I know in the industry and something I am aware of in myself)
The workplace and the world have changed so much in the last 5 years - what does it take to be a female leader today?
Michelle - Being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Being able to shift focus and priorities between the workplace and home life. Having confidence but still being able to be vulnerable. Holding true to yourself and your beliefs. Leaning in to those that are your support system.
