Labour Minister David Piccini announced plans for new legislation aimed at increasing transparency for job seekers. The proposed “Working for Workers” legislation is set to be presented when MPPs reconvene at Queen’s Park during the week of November 14. This new bill is expected to bring about a major change in the workforce. This would mean that it will soon become mandatory for Ontario employers to disclose wages or a salary range on job postings.
Minister Piccini hinted the government may start with salaries under $100,000 a year.
“It’s an unacceptable reality that women today in Ontario earn an average of 87 cents for every dollar earned by men,” Piccini said at a news conference.
“Including salary ranges with job postings can help close the gender pay gap, while allowing companies to find qualified candidates faster and improve retention, helping tackle the labour shortage.”
In Ontario, there are various regulations and initiatives aimed at protecting and supporting workers that look into areas such as Minimum Wage; Worker’s Compensation; Paid Leave and more.
Why mandatory salary disclosure matters?
The new registration has the potential to bring with it:
- Increased Transparency: Requiring employers to disclose wages or a salary range will enhance transparency in the job market. Job candidates will have a clearer understanding of what compensation to expect, reducing uncertainty and potentially attracting more qualified applicants who are aligned with the offered salary.
- Efficient Recruitment Process: With salary information readily available, job candidates can better self-select based on their salary expectations. This can lead to a more efficient recruitment process, as candidates who find the salary range acceptable are more likely to apply, reducing the time and resources spent on reviewing applications from individuals seeking higher compensation.
- Competitive Advantage for Employers: Employers offering competitive salaries may use this as a marketing tool to attract top talent. Clear salary information in job postings can serve as a competitive advantage, helping businesses stand out and appeal to candidates who prioritize transparency and fair compensation.
- Reduced Wage Gap: Mandatory salary disclosure can contribute to reducing wage gaps by promoting fairness and equity. It provides a mechanism for job candidates to assess whether the offered salary aligns with their expectations and qualifications. This increased awareness can contribute to addressing any existing disparities in pay.
- Potential Impact on Negotiations: On the flip side, some candidates may view the disclosed salary as a starting point for negotiations rather than a fixed figure. This could lead to more informed and focused salary discussions during the hiring process, as both parties have a clear understanding of the initial offer.
