Last week the departure of Jordan Banks as President Of Rogers Media (RSM) was announced, he was appointed to the role in September 2019. Jordan took over for Rick Brace who had retired the same year and at time with a lot of change for Rogers. Prior to this he was the Managing Director for Facebook Canada.
Jordan Banks greatest hit as President of Rogers Sports & Media
As President of RSM, Jordan did not have a small task in front of him, multiple assets under the Rogers banner, over 20,000 employees across the country, and a boardroom the continues to prove itself difficult. Like many companies he also faced the advertising duopoly of Facebook and Google who still own well over 60% of global advertising revenue from brands. After taking some time to get look inside Rogers he set out on a journey to revamp the part of the company he was responsible for which resulted in:
- Assembled a high level digital-first team, updating hiring practices to optimize for diversity, a much needed and timely task for Rogers
- Built out and launched All In, $10 Million commitment in free advertising and creative services to support equity-seeking communities
- Built and launched a new streaming platform for Sportsnet
- Built and launched new NHL hockey studio that leverages new technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtuality reality and more
- He also bring a number of digital pure play partnerships to work with the 62 year old company
Not a bad list of accomplishment for just under 3 years with the company, Jordan’s exit comes on the heels another executive level shuffle at Rogers.
What is next for Jordan Banks?
Of course the big question is what will Jordan do next? As someone who has built his career mainly in Canada there is a small chance we will see him go to another country. He has surpassed taking a role at any of the social networks, and many already have someone in their respective top seat, here, here and here. He has accomplished a lot over his career, maybe Mirko Bibic, President and CEO of Bell or Darren Entwistle, President and CEO of TELUS will create a new role for a digital-first innovator.
