The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has granted Google a five-year exemption from the Online News Act, instead ordering it to pay $100 million to Canadian news outlets within 60 days.

Google agreed last year to pay Canadian news publishers $100 million a year to be exempt from the law, which compels tech companies to enter into agreements with news publishers.

Google has entrusted the Canadian Journalism Collective with the responsibility of distributing funds to news outlets.

News Media Canada, representing hundreds of publishers, has previously expressed concerns about the lack of essential information regarding the Canadian Journalism Collective, specifically its governance and the methods for calculating payments and distributing funds.
